The canal stretches from the Basin de l’Arsenal on the Seine to just below La Bastille. The latter is the site of a French Revolution-era prison that was abandoned. It then appears near the Place de la République before rising to the north to the Bassin de la Villette. There, it crosses the Canal de l’Ourcq.
