Bucking Tradition
In 2002, McGraw defied country music traditions when he recorded his album Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors with his tour band The Dancehall Doctors. Unlike rock music, where it’s common for touring bands to make music on albums recorded by the artist they support, country albums are usually recorded with session musicians. However McGraw mixed things up and chose his own touring band, to recognize their part in his success, and also to capture the feel of a real band. The album debuted at No. 2 on the country music charts. McGraw wasn’t afraid of changing things up as an artist, and that’s one of the many things fans love about him.
